This Privacy Policy explains how StoryVault handles information when you use the StoryVault Android app.
Summary
StoryVault is a local media library and reader. In the current version, it has no user accounts, cloud sync, advertising, analytics, crash-reporting service, purchase system, or StoryVault web backend. The app is designed to keep your library information and reading activity on your device.
Information StoryVault accesses
StoryVault accesses only files and folders that you choose through Android's system document picker. Depending on your choices, this can include books, comics, audiobooks, cover artwork, and an image you choose for a shelf or collection background. StoryVault requests read access so it can scan, display, read, or play those files.
The app does not request broad device storage, contacts, location, camera, photo-library, or notification permissions. It declares foreground-service permissions needed for background audiobook playback and media controls. The bundled Media3 playback library also contributes network-state and wake-lock permissions to the merged Android manifest; StoryVault does not use those permissions to upload library data.
Information stored on your device
StoryVault stores app data locally, including:
- selected library folder references and scan status;
- file references and local metadata such as names, formats, sizes, titles, authors, series, and cover references;
- reading and listening progress, recently opened items, reading history, bookmarks, and bookmark notes;
- Favorites, Favorite shelves, Collections, their ordering, descriptions, layouts, and locally selected backgrounds;
- app, reader, audiobook, appearance, layout, and home-dashboard preferences; and
- derived cover thumbnails and temporary reader files in the app's private cache.
Custom shelf and collection backgrounds are stored as references to the files you selected; StoryVault does not become the owner of those files. Imported books, comics, and audiobooks remain separate user files in their original locations.
What leaves the device
The current StoryVault app does not include the Android Internet permission and does not contain a StoryVault network service or network analytics client. The app does not send your library, file contents, reading progress, Favorites, Collections, settings, bookmarks, or device identifiers to StoryVault or an analytics provider.
StoryVault can open this policy in your normal external browser. The browser must request the public page from its hosting provider, so that browser visit is handled by the browser and hosting provider under their own policies. StoryVault does not attach your library data to that request.
Third-party libraries and services
The app uses AndroidX and other bundled libraries for local UI, database storage, document access, image decoding, archive reading, audiobook playback, and the offline WordNet dictionary. The current implementation does not use Firebase, Crashlytics, Sentry, advertising SDKs, authentication, cloud storage, billing, or a remote content API.
If you deliberately open a file with another installed app, Android may share the selected file URI with that app so it can open the file. That other app's handling is governed by its own privacy policy.
Security and retention
Local app data is protected by Android's app storage and device access controls. No method of local storage is completely secure, so protect your device and its storage as appropriate.
StoryVault keeps local records until you remove them in the app, remove the associated library, clear StoryVault app data, or uninstall the app. Android may remove cache files earlier. Clearing app data or uninstalling StoryVault does not delete the original books, comics, audiobooks, or background images stored elsewhere on your device or storage provider.
Children's privacy
StoryVault is not directed to children under 13, and StoryVault does not knowingly collect personal information from children through a remote service.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when StoryVault's behavior changes or when clarification is needed. The updated version will be posted on this page with a new “Last updated” date.
